Twitter: A Social Networking Site
Wednesday, September 9th, 2009Businesses are always looking for a way to market their product and/or services. There are traditional ways in which to market a business, such as brochure mailings, phone book listings and advertisements, as well as newspaper advertisements. These are great marketing strategies. Today, however, there are more innovative ways businesses can help to build on the success of their organization. One of these famous techniques is online networking. Online networking provides innovative ways for businesses to interact with others, often customers and/or clients.
One great networking website that allows you to network with others is Twitter. Twitter is an online social networking site where individuals as well as businesses go to network: talk. You basically learn more about the people that you are following. I like to think of Twitter as an ongoing conversation with those that you follow as well as those who follow you. You can meet new people who are in your field of business as well as possibly obtain a new customer and/or client.
Twitter, however, should not be used to search for new clients and/or customers. As with any social networking site you should first and foremost get to know others. You should not go on Twitter and push your business onto others. Get to know your followers. Join the conversation. Let others know what you are doing, what project you are working on, and let them come to you if they need your product and/or services.
Don’t get me wrong. It’s good to promote your business. But don’t just promote your business, build your relationships, make friends, gain the trust and respect of your followers. Socializing on Twitter can either help your business or hurt your business. The main thing to remember is that you are building relationships. You do not want to be seen as an individual who is only looking for business. If someone, however, asks if anyone can help with a certain project or task, and you feel that you are right for this project, reply. They are asking for help and this is a great opportunity for you to promote what you do best. Until then, build relationships and make friends.

There are too many that have forgotten the SOCIAL part of Twitter and are using it as simply a marketing stream!
I would suspect that many of the non-social twitterbugs will lose interest in a short time.
